Four Eras of Typing

The keyboard evolved through four distinct periods, each shaped by technology, economics, and human habit.

Mechanical Era

1868-1960s. Typewriters dominated offices. The QWERTY layout was born from mechanical constraints. Typing became a profession — "typists" were almost exclusively women.

1960s-1980s. Teletypes, terminals, and early computers. The keyboard survived the transition from paper to screens. ASCII standardized the character set.

1980s-2000s. IBM Model M, membrane keyboards, and the rise of touch typing as a survival skill. Typing speed became a measurable, competitive metric.

Key Moments in Typing History

1868

The Sholes & Glidden Typewriter

Christopher Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel W. Soule patent the first practical typewriter. The QWERTY layout is designed to prevent adjacent type bars from jamming when frequently used letter pairs were typed in rapid succession. The machine is sold to Remington in 1873.

1874

Remington No. 2

The first commercially successful typewriter. Mark Twain is often cited as the first author to submit a typed manuscript (Tom Sawyer, 1876), though this is debated. The QWERTY layout becomes the standard through Remington's market dominance.

Fun Fact: Christopher Sholes was a newspaper editor and politician who invented the typewriter after seeing a friend struggle with a page-numbering machine. He initially disliked QWERTY but couldn't develop a better alternative before selling the patent.
1878

Shift Key Introduced

Remington introduces the shift key, allowing one set of type bars to produce both uppercase and lowercase letters. This halves the number of keys needed and establishes the keyboard layout we still recognize today.

1880s-1920s

The Typing Profession

Typing becomes a major employment category. By 1910, there are over 100,000 typewriters in use in the US alone. The "typewriter girl" becomes a cultural icon. Secretarial schools emerge. Speed competitions draw crowds. The QWERTY layout is locked in by millions of trained typists.

1936

Dvorak Layout Patented

August Dvorak and William Dealey patent the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard after years of research. They demonstrate that Dvorak typists are significantly faster than QWERTY typists. However, a government study (the 1944 "GSA report") finds little advantage — a study later criticized for methodological flaws, as the Dvorak typists were not proficient and the QWERTY typists were experts.

1939-1945

World War II

The war massively expands typing. Military communications, intelligence, and logistics all rely on typewriters. The US Army trains over 100,000 typists. After the war, returning soldiers bring typing skills into civilian jobs. QWERTY's dominance becomes unshakeable.

1961

IBM Selectric

IBM releases the Selectric typewriter with its iconic "golf ball" typing element. It becomes the most popular typewriter in history, used in offices for over two decades. The Selectric doesn't change the QWERTY layout but makes typing faster and more reliable.

1971

ASCII and Computer Terminals

The ASCII standard (1963) is now ubiquitous. Computer terminals use QWERTY keyboards. The keyboard transitions from a paper-writing tool to a computer input device. Touch typing becomes essential, not just professional.

1981

IBM Model M

IBM releases the Model M keyboard with buckling spring switches. It becomes the gold standard for keyboard feel and durability. Many Model M keyboards from the 1980s still work today. It establishes the 101-key layout as the modern standard.

Fun Fact: The IBM Model M weighs over 2 kg (4.5 lbs) and is so well-built that it's been called "the AK-47 of keyboards." Unicomp still manufactures them today using the original tooling.
1984

Apple Macintosh

Apple popularizes the mouse and GUI, but the keyboard remains the primary input device. The Mac's Command key introduces modifier key shortcuts (Cmd+C, Cmd+V) that become universal. Typing is no longer just about text — it's about controlling a computer.

1990s

The Internet and Chat Culture

AOL Instant Messenger, IRC, email, and early forums create millions of casual typists. Typing speed becomes a social status symbol. Typing competitions and tests go online. The "hunt and peck" era ends as people realize that fast typing means faster communication.

2000s

The Membrane Keyboard Era

Cheap membrane keyboards flood the market. Tactile feedback declines. Many people don't know what a mechanical keyboard feels like. Laptop keyboards become thinner and less satisfying. A generation grows up on squishy keys.

2010s

Mechanical Keyboard Renaissance

Cherry MX switches (and clones) spark a mechanical keyboard revival. Gaming culture drives demand for responsive, tactile keyboards. Custom keycaps, artisan keycaps, and keyboard communities flourish on Reddit and YouTube. Keyboards become a form of self-expression.

2020s

Modern Typing

Voice assistants, AI autocomplete, and predictive text challenge the keyboard's dominance. But typing remains essential — code, creative writing, professional communication, and gaming all depend on the keyboard. The layout hasn't changed in 150 years. It probably won't change for another 150.

Why QWERTY Won

Path dependence, network effects, and the cost of switching.

Network Effects

When millions of people type on QWERTY, every new device, software, and shortcut assumes QWERTY. Switching means fighting the entire ecosystem. The layout's ubiquity is self-reinforcing — the more people use it, the harder it is to leave.

Sunk Cost

Every hour spent learning QWERTY is an investment that makes switching costly. For most people, the marginal speed benefit of an alternative layout doesn't justify weeks of relearning. The "good enough" layout wins over the theoretically optimal one.

Hardware Lock-In

QWERTY is printed on every keyboard sold worldwide. Manufacturers won't produce alternative layouts at scale without demand. Users won't demand them without availability. A chicken-and-egg problem that has persisted for over a century.

The Dvorak Paradox

Dvorak proved his layout was faster in controlled tests. But speed in a lab doesn't translate to speed in a world where every computer assumes QWERTY. The "best" layout lost to the "most available" layout — a pattern that repeats across technology (VHS vs Betamax, QWERTY vs everything).
