The concept is simple: each finger has a "home" key on this row, and after pressing any other key (up on the top row or down on the bottom row), the finger returns to its home position. This return-to-home discipline is what keeps your fingers oriented on the keyboard without visual guidance.
Place your left hand on the keyboard. Your left pinky rests on A, ring finger on S, middle finger on D, and index finger on F. Now your right hand: index finger on J, middle finger on K, ring finger on L, and pinky on the semicolon key (;). Both thumbs rest on the spacebar. The F and J keys have small raised bumps or ridges on them. These are tactile markers that let you find the home row by touch alone. Your first week of touch typing practice focuses exclusively on the home row. Do not attempt the top or bottom rows yet. The goal is to build rock-solid muscle memory on these 10 keys so that finding them by touch becomes automatic. This foundation determines how fast you'll ultimately type.
Type each home row key 50 times, one at a time: A A A A A, then S S S S S, and so on through the semicolon. Focus on using the correct finger for each key. Don't worry about speed — focus on accuracy and form. Your fingers should return to home position between each key press.
Type two-key combinations: AS, ASDF, JKL;, DF, JK, FG, HJ. Practice each combination 30 times. The goal is fluid movement between keys without pausing. Your fingers should flow from one key to the next like a pianist playing adjacent notes.
Type home-row-only words: sad, dad, ask, lass, salad, fall, flask, dash, glad, half, shall, ask, all. Type each word 10 times. Start slowly and increase speed as accuracy improves. If you mistype a word, slow down and type it correctly 5 times before moving on.

The top row (Q W E R T Y U I O P) is reached by extending fingers upward from their home positions. Practice in order of frequency. The most common top row letters are E (the most common letter in English), T, Y, U, I, O, and R. Start with these high-frequency keys before bothering with Q, W, and P, which appear less often.
The same-finger consecutive problem is important to understand. When two adjacent top-row letters are typed by the same finger (like E and R on the left index finger), you must type them sequentially — press E, return to home, press R. The bottom row contains extremely common letters: N (used in "and," "not," "in"), M (used in "more," "my," "make"), C (used in "can," "could," "create"), and V (used in "have," "very," "over"). Getting fast on these four letters alone makes a significant difference in overall typing speed.
Practice the bottom row in isolation for the first two days: Z-X-C-V-B-N-M sequences. Then practice words that mix all three rows: "quick," "jump," "pack," "box," "mix," "complex," "jumps," "boxed."
