WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard metric — it counts words where 1 word = 5 characters. CPM (Characters Per Minute) counts every keystroke. The formula: CPM ÷ 5 = WPM. Typemasters uses CPM because it updates faster and is more precise for practice tracking.
The industry standard for measuring typing speed.
WPM is the most widely recognized typing speed metric. It measures how many "words" you type in one minute. The critical detail is that a "word" in typing metrics is standardized as exactly 5 characters, including spaces. This standardization exists because English words vary enormously in length — "a" is one character while "configuration" is thirteen. Using a 5-character standard makes WPM consistent and comparable across different texts and typing tests.
The calculation is straightforward: count all characters typed (including spaces), divide by 5 to get the number of "words," then divide by the time in minutes. For example, if you type 500 characters in 2 minutes, that's 500 ÷ 5 = 100 "words," divided by 2 minutes = 50 WPM. Most typing tests display your WPM in real-time, updating every second as you type.
There are two variants of WPM. Gross WPM counts all keystrokes, including errors. It shows your raw typing speed. Net WPM subtracts errors from the total — each error reduces your score by one word. Net WPM is more meaningful because it accounts for accuracy. A typist who types 80 WPM with 10 errors has a Net WPM of 70. Professional typing tests and job assessments use Net WPM.
Job applications, typing certifications, speed tests, employer assessments, and casual comparisons. When someone asks "how fast do you type?", they're asking for WPM. It's the universal language of typing speed.
WPM doesn't account for the complexity of what you're typing. Typing simple English prose at 60 WPM is very different from typing code with symbols, brackets, and variable names at 60 WPM. Code requires more key reaches and modifier combinations, so effective coding speed is lower than prose speed at the same WPM.
The raw measure of keystroke speed.
CPM counts every individual character you type — letters, numbers, symbols, spaces, and punctuation marks. Unlike WPM, it doesn't group characters into standardized "words." This makes CPM a more granular and responsive metric, which is why Typemasters uses CPM for real-time tracking during gameplay.
CPM is more sensitive to small speed changes than WPM. If you increase your typing speed by 5 keystrokes per minute, your CPM increases by 5, but your WPM only increases by 1. This finer granularity makes CPM better for tracking incremental progress during practice. When you're trying to improve from 40 to 45 WPM, the difference is hard to see in WPM numbers, but CPM shows the improvement clearly.
CPM is also more accurate for non-English typing. WPM's 5-character word standard assumes English text. When typing in languages with longer average word lengths (like German) or shorter average word lengths (like Chinese characters), CPM provides a more accurate speed measurement. For code-heavy typing, CPM better represents actual keystroke speed because code contains many non-letter characters that WPM's word standard doesn't accurately capture.

Beyond WPM and CPM, these metrics complete the picture.
The percentage of keystrokes that are correct. Calculated as: (correct keystrokes / total keystrokes) × 100. Accuracy of 95%+ is the target for productive typing. Below 90%, you're spending more time correcting than typing. Track accuracy alongside speed — a fast typist with low accuracy is actually slower than a moderate typist with high accuracy.
Used primarily in data entry and transcription job listings. To convert: KPH ÷ 60 = CPM, then CPM ÷ 5 = WPM. Most data entry jobs require 8,000-10,000 KPH, which equals roughly 27-33 WPM. Speed data entry positions require 12,000+ KPH (40+ WPM).
Some typing tests measure Effective WPM, which penalizes both errors and corrections. It represents your actual productive output — how many correct words per minute you produce after accounting for all corrections. Effective WPM is always lower than Gross WPM and is the most realistic measure of real-world typing speed.
The percentage of keystrokes that are incorrect. Inversely related to accuracy: Error Rate = 100% - Accuracy%. An error rate of 5% means 1 in 20 keystrokes is wrong. For professional typing, error rate should be below 2%. Error rate is more useful than accuracy for tracking improvement because small improvements (97% → 98%) are easier to see as error reductions (3% → 2%).

Different methods produce different results. Know what you're measuring.
The most common way to measure typing speed is an online typing test. You're given a passage to type, and the test measures how many characters or words you produce in a set time (usually 1, 3, or 5 minutes). These tests vary in what they measure: some show Gross WPM (raw speed), others show Net WPM (speed minus errors), and some show CPM (raw keystrokes).

For the most accurate measurement, take multiple tests and average the results. Your first test of the day is usually slower (cold start), and tests taken when tired produce lower scores. The best approach: take 3 tests at different times of day and average the middle score. This eliminates warm-up effects and fatigue effects.
When comparing your speed to others, make sure you're using the same metric. Someone claiming "120 WPM" might be reporting Gross WPM from a lenient test, while someone claiming "80 WPM" might be reporting Net WPM from a strict test. The second person might actually be faster. Always ask what metric and which test when comparing speeds.

CPM is better for tracking incremental progress because it's more granular. A 20 CPM improvement shows clearly on charts, while the equivalent 4 WPM improvement is harder to see. WPM is better for comparing against benchmarks and job requirements because it's the industry standard.
